EMMELO's Jozef Michal Mintal took part in this year's Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association (APSA) in Boston, where he presented new research and served as a discussant. Two co-authored papers speak directly to questions at the heart of EMMELO: how exclusionary positions come to look more widely accepted than they are, and how gender stereotypes shape political judgement.

The first, with Paweł Charasz, Anil Menon and Ilker Kalin, asks how willing citizens are to give up civil liberties in exchange for government action against immigration. Using a list experiment in pre-registered surveys across Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Turkey and the United States, with more than 16,000 respondents, the authors find that people report more support for this trade-off when asked directly than they privately hold. With a follow-up study suggesting social pressure and misperception are at play more than private conviction.

The second, with Mária Žuffová and Klára Kaničárová, uses a survey experiment in Slovakia and the United States to examine the double standard that women politicians can face when implicated in corruption, and whether the gender stereotypes behind it can be defused.
